What you can learn from this centuries-old math mystery
What you can learn from this centuries-old math mysteryWhat you can learn from this centuries-old math mysteryIn 1637, Pierre de Fermat scribbled a note on a textbook margin that would baffle mathematicians for more than three centuries.Fermat had a theory. He proposed that theres no solution to the formulaan+bn=cnfor any n greater than 2. I have a truly marvelous demonstration of this proposition, he wrote, which this margin is too narrow to contain. And thats all he wrote.Fermat died before supplying the missing proof for what came to be known as Fermats belastung Theorem. The teaser he left behind continued to tantalize mathematicians for centuries (and made them wish Fermat had a bigger book to write on). Generations of mathematicians tried- and failed- to prove Fermats belastung Theorem.Until Andrew Wiles came along. For most 10-year-olds, the definition of a good time doesnt include reading math books for fun. But Wiles was no ordinary 10-year-old. He would hang out at his local library in Cambridge, England, and surf the shelves for math books. One day, he spotted a book devoted entirely to Fermats Last Theorem. He was tantalized by the mystery of a theorem that was so easy to state, yet so difficult to prove. Lacking the mathematical chops to tackle the proof, he platzdeckchen it aside for over two decades. He returned to the theorem later in life as a math hochschulprofessor and devoted seven years to working on it in almost total secrecy. In an ambiguously-titled 1993 lecture in Cambridge, Wiles publicly revealed that he had solved the centuries-old mystery of Fermats Last Theorem. The announcement sent mathematicians in attendance, and around the globe, into a tizzy Its the most exciting thing thats happened in - geez - maybe ever, in mathematics, said Dr. Leonard Adelman. EvenThe New York Timesran a front-page story on the discovery, exclaiming At Last Shout of Eureka in Age-Old Math Mystery. But the celebrations proved premature. Wiles had made a mist ake in a critical part of his proof. The mistake emerged during the peer-review process after Wiles submitted his proof for publication. It would take another year, and collaboration with another mathematician, to repair the proof. Describing the day he found the missing piece, Wiles said, I walked around the department, and Id keep coming back to my desk looking to see if it was still there. It was still there. I couldnt contain myself. At the end, the proof was 150 pages long - far longer than any book margin would have allowed Fermat to write on.Reflecting on how he managed to prove the theorem, Wiles compared the process of discovery to navigating a dark mansion. You start in the first room, he said, and spend months groping, poking, and bumping into things in a hit-or-miss process. After tremendous disorientation and confusion, you might eventually find the light switch. You then move on to the next dark room and begin the process all over again. These breakthroughs, Wiles expla ins, are the culmination of - and couldnt exist without - the many months of stumbling around in the dark that proceed them.In school, were given the false impression that scientists took a straight path to the light switch. Textbooks with lofty titles - The Principles of Physics- magically reveal the principles in three hundred digestible pages. An authority figure then steps up to the lectern to feed us the truth. We learn about Newtons laws - as if they arrived by a grand divine visitation or a stroke of genius - but not the years he spent exploring, revising, and tweaking them. The laws that Newton failed to establish - most notably his experiments in alchemy, which attempted, and spectacularly failed, to turn lead into gold - dont make the cut.The path to the light switch is not a straight one. There are fits and starts, mistakes and corrections, failures and successes.Be careful if the paths youre taking to the light switches in your life are straight. If the drugs your e developing were certain to work, if your client were certain to be acquitted in court, if your Mars rover were certain to get to its destination, your jobs wouldnt exist. Its the ability to make the most out of uncertainty that creates the most potential value.Where certainty ends, progress begins.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. After 20 Years, Salesman Relocates to His Hometown
After 20 Years, Salesman Relocates to His HometownAfter 20 Years, Salesman Relocates to His HometownAfter eight corporate moves, H.C. Alexander wanted to return to New Orleans. A fortuitous phone call paved his way.H.C. Alexander had made eight corporate moves during his career as a sales manager, traveling across Georgia and Louisiana, north to Chicago, and west to Dallas. After nearly 30 years, the SalesLadder member welches living in Houston working for an information management company and thinking he had one last move in him - if it was the right move.At the age of 59, he said, there was only one place he wanted to go.I really wanted to relocate back home to Louisiana, he said. While he had worked in his hometown of New Orleans for short stretches before and had stints managing territory that included his home state, it had been 20 years since he lived in the New Orleans area. This time, he was looking to put down roots. belastung spring, a shakeup at his former employer, Recal l, convinced him it was time to think about making the move.My former employer was going through a lot of organizational changes, Alexander said. There had been two major reorganizations between January and the spring. Neither one touched my position one stopped one level below me. The other stopped one level above me. But I didnt know what to expect next. It wasnt a good working environment.Between my desire to get back to Louisiana and the uncertainty at work, I decided to start looking, he said. I always had a desire to come back to Louisiana for the right opportunity.A passive searchAlexander, born and raised in New Orleans, began his sales career in that city. Its home, its comfortable, and I have a lot of business contacts there. I have a lot of family there. Ive always had some sort of connection to it.Doing a job search with a specific location in mind can create roadblocks. But Alexander had searched for jobs with a specific location in mind before - Atlanta jobs had been a destination earlier in his career - so he wasnt too concerned about how long his job search might take.I wasnt desperate to find a new job, he said. I was only going to take a position if the perfect opportunity presented itself. So I wasnt doing my usual active search, which would have included doing my own prospecting and calls and sending out letters. I wasnt networking and doing all the things youd normally do.In fact, posting his resume on Ladders was part of his passive strategy. I had used Ladders in a previous search, he said. I was familiar with what it could do I thought if I put my resume on the site, I had a good chance of hearing from recruiters. And he was right. He posted his resume on Ladders in late spring of 2009 and checked the listings a couple of times a week to see if there were any jobs of interest. Nothing was popping up in the New Orleans area. But six weeks into his search, he received an e-mail from a recruiter. The contact was from an outside recruiting f irm that was hired by an information-services company the recruiter was asking for referrals from Alexander. He said he was looking to hire people with my skills and experience for open positions in Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta. I had worked in Chicago and Atlanta, and he was hoping I might have contacts. While the recruiter didnt ask him whether he was interested in the positions - I think because I was in Houston, he didnt think Id be interested in relocating - Alexander didnt hesitate to ask him if there were any open positions in Louisiana. He responded almost immediately with New Orleans, said Alexander. Thats how we got together. From there, the process went fairly quickly, first with a phone screen with a recruiter then an internal phone interview and finally, a series of interviews with VPs. The more I interviewed, the more interested I became in the job, he said. My new company is actually a competitor of my former company, so I had the experience in the industry I k new the market pretty well. And Im very familiar with the territory.Bringing it all back homeHe was offered the position of district sales manager for Louisiana and Mississippi in mid-September and started his new job in early October. His new company, Shred-it, provides companies support with confidential records and information management.Alexander credits his low-key approach to his job search to knowing elend just what I really wanted but what I didnt want, he said. My goals and ambitions are different than they were 20 years ago Blind ambition isnt what its about anymore.Knowing where he wanted to be, he said, made it easy for him to make the decision to look for another job, and easier to make one more move. Even in this job market, where so many things are still uncertain, he felt it was a good time to move ahead with his search. If you know what you want, its easy to make a choice, to decide whether you need to make a change, he said. And, knowing what he knows about himself, he is hoping this is his last move. I hope to stay in New Orleans, retire there, he said. How does that old country song go? This is my first date for the last time. I hope this is my first day on the new job for the last time.

7 Things to Know if Youre Applying to a Reach Position
7 Things to Know if Youre Applying to a Reach Position7 Things to Know if Youre Applying to a Reach Position You spot your dream job , but its a reach- a reach beyond the next step in your career. Its two steps or three steps or 10 steps removed from what your next job should be- and so, you stop just short of applying. But you should apply anyway. Why? As career coach Hallie Crawford says, reaching is a way to grow as a professional and achieve new career goals. Before you submit your resume and cover letter, however, there are at least seven things you should know about applying to a reach position. These insider tips and tricks will help you stand out from the crowd and score your dream job. Read on to learn more. 1. Youll have to battle hiring managers assumptions. Its all but a fact Hiring managers will make assumptions based on your resume and cover letter, warns millennial career expert Jill Jacinto . So, it is your job to connect the dots for them befor e they place your resume in the no pile. How can you do that? Its easy, Jacinto promises. Give them a clear understanding of leid only why you are applying for this role but how your current skill set is a complement to the work that you will be doing, she says. 2. Transferable skills will help you stand out in the right way. You may not meet all the requirements of your dream job. But rather than focusing on what youre missing, highlight the skills you have that will help you succeed in any position- and youll catch a recruiters attention in the best way, says Crawford. Maybe you dont have a specific qualification, but youve already been using the skills the qualification demands in another way, she says. Make those your star stories to show youre up for the challenge.3. Hiring managers want people open to learning new skills. You may believe it or not, but a willingness to learn what you dont already know can be just as valuable as already having the knowledge when it comes to applying to a reach position. Employers know that it will be almost impossible to find someone who can tick off all the boxes on their checklist, Jacinto explains. Instead, hiring managers are looking for people who are open to learning new skills. In your application, clearing highlighting the fact that you have been trained in other roles, have used new technology, or gone back to school to excel in a certain area helps show that you would be a good fit, Jacinto says.4. Sometimes its not what you know, but who you know. Before you apply to a position thats a couple steps above your current paygrade, consider setting up an informational interview with someone who already has your dream job. Find out what else is needed to be successful at that position besides the qualifications you are lacking, such as soft skills, instructs Crawford, who adds that , this will help you feel more confident in an interview as well as help you to showcase what you do bring to the table. 5. Yo u cant avoid the fact this is a reach for you. As much as you might like to do so, its not prudent to sweep the fact youre reaching for this position under the rug. So, dont hope that the hiring manager doesnt notice that you dont meet all of the qualifications, especially if they were listed in the job description, says Crawford. Instead, be proactive and bring up the fact you are aware that you dont meet all of the qualifications on paper, but also that you are ready and able to take on the position.6. Some hiring managers dont know what they want- until they meet you. Dont count yourself out just because you dont meet all of the qualifications a job requires, encourages Jacinto. Hiring managers often do not necessarily know 100 percent what they want in a candidate until the right one walks into the door, she points out. So, use this as an opportunity to sell your background, skills, connections, enthusiasm, and references during your interview and within your cover letter. And s peaking of having references What you may lack in experience or previous job titles you can make up for with glowing references. References are always important, but theyre especially important in this case, says Crawford. If a hiring manager is considering you despite your being underqualified, you want to make sure that your references will sing your praises . Be sure to prepare a list in advance of your application, and dont forget to reach out to each potential reference to make sure he or she is willing to provide a very positive review of your performance.

18 ways to be more productive in 2018
18 ways to be more productive in 201818 ways to be more productive in 2018Its a few weeks into a brand-new year and chances are good youve already tossed your resolutions by the wayside and are slipping back into your old ways. Fear not Weve come up with 18 ways to inspire you to reclaim your productivity in the coming months.1. Turn off notificationsYou dont have to check your email or social media every few minutes, said Julie Cole, co-founder of the multimillion dollar company,Mabels Labels. When working on a project, turn off notifications so you dont get distracted by them.2. fraktion off social timeLest you miss exclusively erreichbar opportunities, Cole advises carving out 10 minutes every couple of hours to check in. Train your staff/contacts to NOT expect you to respond within minutes of them contacting you.3. Cut down on drive-bysCole describes times when people pop into your office with a quick question as distracting, and it takes you valuable time to redirect your attent ion to what you were doing prior to their interruption. Make people schedule meetings with you.4. Touch it onceIf I take the time to read an email, I deal with it right then and there, said Cole. If I decide to put off dealing with it, it will later require me to re-read and re-think my response.5. Demand a deadlineCole thinks it wise to keep to this rule whether its from the person making a work request or for yourself.6. Create an agendaCole refuses to attend meetings without set agendas. Theyre inefficient, and the agenda usually lets me know if its worth my even attending the meeting. Also, make sure efficient minutes are taken, and follow up action items clearly identified and assigned.7. Pretend youre in an officeEven if you telecommute, always get dressed for work Your brain naturally uses your clothes as visual cues on what it should be doing and when, according to Ali Craig of Fix My Brand with Ali Craig. If you stay in your PJs all day your brain thinks you should be sleep ing all day.8. Write it downCraig says, The simple act of writing down our notes, lists, projects with pen and on paper allows our subconscious mind to retain the information. And keep track of it9. Learn something newFind tutorials or online courses for new technologies that you might not immediately understand. Lynda.com and YouTube are excellent, cost-effective resources, said Arvind Raichur at MrOwl.10. Sync itRaichur advises organizing your information by keeping trusted sites and resources in one place, synced across devices so you can stay abreast of news and updates regardless of where you are.11. SprintOur brains are hardwired to work in 45-minute chunks of time. After the 45 minutes are up, your productivity goes down, Craig said.12. Create RitualsBe more productive and love your work way more when you transform your business systems into brand rituals, Craig advised. Try toEngage your senses even on mundane tasks, like doing the books, so you can have a positive connectio n and outcome.13. Create long-term plansRaichur advises figuring out how to solve a long-term problem and then creating an action plan surrounded by the right team.14. Change it upFor each task at hand, change your environment, Craig advised, which will reawaken your brain to increase productivity and problem-solving abilities.15. Pick up the phoneConsider calling people before texting or emailing them, advised Carolyn Thompson, Managing Principal of the Merito Group, since You can speak with someone and accomplish much more in a few minutes of conversation than back and forth typing over the course of a few hours.16. Create a stahlkammer spaceRaichur said youll improve teamwork (and probably cut down on sniping) by creating a safe space for employees to share ideas and feel heard.17. Use your scentsTo combat brain fog, Craig advises smelling citrus fragrances to stimulate the brain and increase productivity. If youre unable to find a solution to a problem, she suggests you head to the coffee house, since the sound of coffee beans grinding and the smell of coffee beans roasting is proven to increase your focus and problem-solving ability.18. Dont beat yourself upThis ones from me. Perfection is both unattainable and overrated, and beating yourself up after screwing up or missing a deadline will only hold you back from the next great thing.

How to Get a Job at the Zoo
How to Get a Job at the tiergartenHow to Get a Job at the ZooCareer opportunities at tierparklogical parks can be quite scarceas many animal career seekers are interested in working with exotic wildlife. Zoos usually receive dozens of applications for each position advertised. It is certainly possible to increase your odds of landing one of these coveted positions by enhancing your resume with hands-on experience and education. Determine an Area of Interest The first step to getting a job at the zoo is determining what career path you would like to pursue. Popular zoo career options include zookeeper, zoo educator, zoologist, wildlife veterinarian, and veterinary assistant, though there are also many roles available in management, administration, and support positions. By defining your area of interest early on, you can select your college courses and internships to strengthen your resume for that career path. Thoroughly research the career that you intend to pursue. You might be able to arrange an interview with a zoo staff member who holds the type of position you are interested in meeting with someone who works in your field of choice can be invaluable. You can also research zoo careers through the Association of Zoos Aquariums,in career guidebooks, or in animal industry publications. Gain Education The level of education required for a particular position can vary from a two-year degree to a four-year degree, with some positions requiring additional study at the graduate level. fruchtwein students seeking zoo careers will major in fields such as biology, zoology, animal behavior, animal science, conservation science, or another related area. Keeper positions may only require an associate degree, though many keepers do have four-year bachelor of science degrees. Positions such as zoologist generally require a B.S. degree at minimum, with M.S. or Ph.D. degrees being preferable. Veterinarians must first complete their undergraduate degree before going on to veterinary school those pursuing board certification in the veterinary field face additional years of training and testing. Gain Hands-On Experience Volunteer internships are a great way to gain hands-on experience at a zoo. Many zoos have programs designed to allow members of the community to work with their animals in some capacity. Tasks may involve assisting with educational programs, helping to prepare daily rations for the animals, assisting with veterinary care, shadowing keepers as they care for animals throughout the day, or helping to maintain animal enclosures. Some zoos also have paid part-time or seasonal positions available. If there is not a zoo located close to you, it is also possible to gain experience by working, volunteering, or pursuing internships with animals at aquariums, museums, animal parks, humane societies, rescue groups, stables, wildlife rehabilitation facilities, or fish and game offices. Gaining experience as a veterinary assistant is a bi g plus for a variety of zoo career paths. Assisting a vet who deals with wildlife species is ideal, but working for an equine vet, large animal vet, or small animal vet also provides valuable experience that will enhance your resume. The key factor here is to gain experience by working with a variety of animals in a hands-on capacity. Find an Opportunity Zoo jobs may be advertised in trade publications like the Journal of Zoology, Zoo Biology, the Canadian Journal of Zoology, and other similar industry print offerings. Colleges and universities may get advance notice of impending vacancies, so it is wise to subscribe to any job-related email lists your educational institution may offer. Irazbal-Zurita, PhD, Director of the Latina/Latino Studies Program and Professor of Planning at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, told WalletHub about the worst thing people do when relocating. The biggest mistake people make when planning a move to a new place is mis-estimating the relationship between sources of income that are going to be available in t he new setting and the cost of living, she told the site. If income is insufficient, people can incur in debt and the situation will eventually become unsustainable. People may be forced to have more than one job, potentially compromising their quality of life and health. Negatively, people may face financial default or house eviction, from which it is hard to recover.
